“Air Pollution Awareness Workshop on Impacts of PM2.5”

The Regional Resource Centre for Asia and the Pacific (RRCAP) has organized the “Air Pollution Awareness Workshop on Impacts of PM2.5” as part of its 30th anniversary celebration in order to communicate and deliver persuasive, evidence-based and solution-oriented messages to the general public, decision-makers, academe/students, scientists, private sector and different stakeholders pertaining to air quality. RRCAP continues to provide the public with current air quality information, in the event of an environmental emergency imminently threatening the safety of human life and ecosystem.
The workshop was aimed to provide an overview on the current issues and situations on PM2.5 in Thailand, the knowledge about the air quality, and the recommendations and measures to mitigate air pollution. The workshop will cover the health effects of PM2.5, current situation in Bangkok, its sources, measures taken by the government and Bangkok Metropolitan Administration and their effectiveness, and measures which should have been taken, among others. The result of the recent study on PM2.5 in Thailand was also presented during the workshop.

Speakers
Dr. Supat Wangwongwatana
Dr. Supat Wangwongwatana has been instrumental and responsible for the improvement of air quality in Thailand in particular in Bangkok. In 2001, he was the first recipient of Honorary Degree from USEPA’s Air Pollution Training Institute. He was awarded an Asian Air Quality Management Champion from the Clean Air Initiative for Asian Cities for his efforts to institutionalize air quality management in Thailand and for acting as a role model for air quality management practitioners in cities and countries across Asia. In 2015, he was awarded the EANET Award of Recognition for his long term involvement and contribution to the EANET. He also received the 2016 Kong Ha Award for Excellence in Air Quality Management from Clean Air Asia (CAA) as a scientist and practitioner. He received his Bachelor Degree of Science in Public Health (Occupational Health) from Mahidol University in 1977, Master Degree on Environmental Science and Management from Asian Institute of Technology (AIT) in 1980, Ph.D. in Air Pollution Engineering from University of Cincinnati, in 1988.
Dr. Ekbordin Winijkul
Dr. Ekbordin Winijkul has joined as Assistant Professor in the Department of Energy, Environment and Climate Change at School of Environment, Resources and Development, Asian Institute of Technology. He obtained his PhD. in Environmental Engineering from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (UIUC), USA. He graduated from AIT with Master’s in Environmental Technology and Management and Bachelor’s in Environmental Engineering from Chiang Mai University. Prior to joining AIT, Dr. Ekbordin worked as an Emission Scientist at the Atmospheric and Environmental Research (AER), Inc., Massachusetts, USA, and as Assistant Environmental Engineer at Argonne National Laboratory, Illinois, USA. His research interest includes but not limited to Air Pollution Emission Inventory, Air Pollution Controls and Modeling, Household Emission Distribution and Mitigation Scenarios, Transportation Emission Reduction Strategies, and Air Quality Monitoring and Modeling.
