In the ASEAN region, approximately two thousand used vehicles are exported every year from Japan, which include both entire cars and recycled parts. As the automobile market in the ASEAN region keeps growing, the markets for used vehicles and recycled parts are expected to keep expanding in the ASEAN region. Under these circumstances, an estimate predicts that about 2.4 million motor vehicles will be discarded in 2020. On the other hand, institutional systems for recycling are yet to be developed in a number of the ASEAN countries, leading to problems such as improper disposal of End-of-Life Vehicles (ELV) and environmental pollution, among others.

With the forecast of expanding vehicle recycling markets in the region, the state-of-the-art technology for vehicle dismantling and know-hows for distribution and network building, developed by Japanese car dismantling companies or reconditioned auto parts distributors could become essential in fostering healthy markets in the region. The objectives of this project are to survey on vehicle recycling systems and vehicle recycling in the ASEAN Region. This project co-secretariat are Mitsubishi Research Institute Inc. (MRI) and Asian Institute of Technology, Regional Resource Center for Asia and the Pacific (AIT RRC.AP) and under the auspices by Economic Research Institute for ASEAN and East Asia (ERIA) Jakarta.
