WEPA Group Workshop on Piggery Wastewater Management in Asia, 21-22 February, Chiang Mai, Thailand

A two-day Water Environmental Partnership in Asia (WEPA) workshop on Piggery Wastewater Management in Asia was organised by the Institute for Global Environmental Strategies (IGES) on 21-22 February at Chiang Mai, Thailand. A total of 25 participants from Cambodia, China, Indonesia, Japan, Myanmar, Sri Lanka, Thailand, and Vietnam participated in the workshop. On the first day of the workshop, the participating countries made presentation on the country status on pig production, associated impact of piggery wastewater to water environment, and the existing pollution control (technology and policy) measures for

piggery wastewater management in their respective countries. RRC.AP made a presentation on the situation of piggery wastewater management in Thailand. The presentation was based on the findings from a desk research project being conducted by RRC.AP for the IGES. The second day of the workshop was a site visit to the Energy Research and Development Institute (ERDI) at Chiang Mai University, and the V.P.F Pig Farm, Lamphun. The objective of the workshop was to facilitate exchange of learning and experiences among the WEPA countries to move towards sustainable piggery wastewater management.

WEPA, with its 13 Asian member countries (Cambodia, China, Indonesia, Japan, Republic of Korea, Lao PDR, Malaysia, Myanmar, Nepal, Philippines, Sri Lanka, Thailand, and Vietnam), aims to promote good governance in water environment by providing capacity development activities through sharing of information and knowledge, and capacity development activities. The IGES serves as the WEPA Secretariat.
