​​The Thirteenth Session of the Intergovernmental Meeting (IG13) of the Malé Declaration on Control and Prevention of Air Pollution and its Likely Transboundary Effects for South Asia (Malé Declaration) was held in Dhaka, Bangladesh on 20 May 2013. The event was attended by the representatives of the participating countries, namely, Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Iran, Maldives, Nepal, Pakistan, and Sri Lanka. Some international organizations, such as, the South Asia Cooperative Environment Programme (SACEP), Stockholm Environment Institute (SEI), United Nations Environment Program (UNEP) Headquarters, and the Regional Resource Centre for Asia and the Pacific (RRC.AP) were also represented. A regional facilitator and some experts were also invited as resource persons in the Session.

The IG13 acknowledged the Progress Report on Malé Declaration. It was concluded that the capacity of member countries to address the transboundary air pollution issues has been improved and enhanced. The Guidelines for implementation of the sustainable financial mechanism; Guidelines for the next steps of implementation on strengthening the framework on air pollution reduction in South Asia", and Guidelines for the operation of the regional centres were endorsed by the Session. The reports on the results of health impact and crop impact studies were also endorsed. The Synthesis Report, which presents the achievements of the Malé Declaration in areas as diverse as emission inventory preparation, air pollution monitoring and modelling, health, crop, ecosystem and corrosion impact assessment, integrated assessment modelling, the development of policy responses and awareness raising activities, was endorsed by the IG13. It shows that the Malé Declaration has established a platform that can potentially deliver significant benefits for the people of South Asia and their environment. More importantly, the IG13 approved the Plan for Phase V (2014-2016) implementation of the Malé Declaration.
