Background of AWMAP project
Based on the 3R Platform, AIT/UNEP Regional Resource Centre for Asia and the Pacific (RRC.AP) launched the 3R Project in collaboration with the Ministry of the Environment Japan (MOEJ), the Institute of Global Environmental Strategies (IGES) and the UN Centre for Regional Development (UNCRD).

South East Asia (SEA) was selected as the first subregion in Asia-Pacific to start the 3R project. The subregion plays an important role of resource contribution to Asia-Pacific region. The countries in SEA share a number of common environmental conditions. With increasing population in urban area of SEA countries, the first common priority problem lies on waste. Increasing solid waste from urban area and problems of industrial waste management have led to environmental pollution and health hazard to people of the subregion resulting in decreasing trend of their quality of life.

Based on the endorsed 3R Initiative and the aim to implement the initiative in Asia and the Pacific region, MOEJ, IGES, and AIT/UNEP RRC.AP agreed to jointly work on the project called "Advanced Waste Management in Asia and the Pacific (AWMAP)" and start the project first in SEA. The project will be a project to support and contribute to the implementation of 3R Initiative in the Asia-Pacific region. The purpose of the work is to assist governments to devise the national action plan on solid waste management in Asia and Pacific region, with the focus on Thailand, Philippines, and Cambodia.
