Informal Meeting on Mercury Activities in Thailand

Mr. Guilberto Borongan from the Waste Management Cluster of RRC.AP shared information on mercury-related projects and activities in the Asian region at the Informal Meeting on Mercury hosted by the Pollution Control Department (PCD), Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment (MONRE), Thailand on 4 December 2017. The meeting was organized in partnership with the Japanese Embassy in Bangkok. The objective of the meeting was to share information on activities on Mercury in Thailand and in the Asian region. Among the discussed items were: (i) mercury inventory in Thailand; (ii) import and export of mercury, dental Amalgam; (iii) mercury-added products and cosmetics; and (iv) interim and/or long term storage and disposal of mercury. The meeting was presided by Ms. Teeraporn Wiriwutikorn, Director of Hazardous Substance Division in PCD. About 20 participants from PCD/MONRE, UNEP ROAP, WHO, UNIDO, Food & Drug Administration of Thailand, and the private sectors, including Waste Management Siam (WMS-member of DOWA), IDEA, AJINOMOTO, and EXRI, attended the meeting. The next meeting which will be held back to back with the working group (inter-agency meeting) on Mercury in Thailand, was tentatively scheduled to happen in April 2018.
