Inception Workshop on Mercury-containing Medical Devices Management Project in the Philippines

​AIT RRCAP, together with the DENR Philippines and BanToxics conducted an inception workshop for the Philippines under the JAIF funded project “Development of Capacity for the Substitution and the Environmentally Sound Management (ESM) of Mercury-containing Medical Measuring Devices” in the Philippines on April 28, 2021. The inception workshop was conducted as a follow up activity to a successful project kick-off meeting held on April 7, 2021, where the core working group discussed and approved the project workplan and methodology.

The inception workshop, among other objectives, aims at engaging broader key stakeholder groups of the project while at the same time increasing awareness on the need to support the Phase out and the ESM of Mercury-containing medical measuring devices in the Philippines., to discuss and engage broader key stakeholder groups of the project and increase awareness on the need to support the objectives of the project. A total of about 120 participants representing public environment and health agencies, trade and industry agency, bureau of Customs and medical associations. In attendance also were representatives from academia, NGOs, and international consultant and local institutional consultant; experts from Japan, Mission of Japan to ASEAN, ASEAN Secretariat and JAIF Monitoring Team (JMT).

In their opening remarks, Director Engr. William Cunado, and Dr. Beverly Lorraine C. Ho on behalf of the Environmental Management Bureau, DENR and the Department of Health of the Philippines, respectively expressed their gratitude to Ban Toxics and AIT RRC.AP for facilitating the implementation the project. They underscored the relevance of the project to the country and health facilities. Mr. Yoshiaki Inada, the First Secretary, Mission of Japan to ASEAN, Embassy of Japan in Indonesia expressed the Government of Japan’s commitment to building capacity in the Philippines and other ASEAN in implementing the Minamata Convention.

Dr. Naoya Tsukamoto, Director of AIT RRC.AP expressed his appreciation to the Government of Japan, through the JAIF and ASEAN Secretariat for endorsing the project. He expressed his confidence in the impact, the project outcome may bring to other ASEAN Member States in the ESM of mercury in the region. He emphasized AIT RRCAP’s key role in mercury waste management in the region and is confident that with the support of all stakeholders this effort will lead to better policy making and planning and implementation of ESM of mercury waste in the region. Further technical discussions and inputs were collected from participants to guide the project activities.
