This National State of the Environment (SoE) Report of Bhutan is the one of seven nationalreports from the above process, focusing on two Asia-Pacific subregions, namely South Asia(Bangladesh, Bhutan, Maldives, Nepal and Sri Lanka) and the Greater Mekong (Lao PDRand Vietnam) Subregions. The National Environment Commission (NEC) of the RoyalGovernment of Bhutan, which is the national implementing agency, has played a very crucialrole in carrying out this participatory assessment process in soliciting input from variousgovernment sectoral agencies. Around 20 agencies and 55 individuals were involved in theprocess. With the substantive support from the Tata Energy Research Institute (TERI), thedesignated collaborating center of UNEP, and regular feedback from the South AsiaCooperative Environment Programme (SACEP), this assessment exercise has beensuccessful and instrumental in providing significant input to the ongoing South Asia SoEpreparation. It aims at providing guidelines for environmental action planning, policy settingand resource allocation for the coming decades, based on a sound analysis of the state of,and trends in, the nation’s environment.
