Nepal is the land of many rivers and lakes. There is a growing demand on water resources due to growth of population, expansion of irrigation facilities, tourism, urbanization and industries. Surface water and groundwater resources have deteriorated in Kathmandu valley and other major urban centers. Although electricity consumption has increased tremendously in the past fifteen years, less than 1 % of total hydropower potential has been generated so far.
