Waste for Sustainable Development (WSD)-Asia Pacific University Consortium

UNEP IETC is facilitating a University Consortium to develop an academic curriculum on holistic waste management for professionals, such as policy makers, managers and technicians, as part of the capacity building at the national and city level. The specific objectives:

  • an opportunity for countries in the Asia-pacific region to evaluate and realize its own country competence on waste management knowledge and gaps that inhibit the country to achieve the environmental goals;
  • to develop a standard curriculum to suit the identified capacity gaps (practical obstacles, technical and knowledge gaps) in waste management in the Asia and the Pacific countries; and
  • to build a capacity of all stakeholders in the developing countries in Asia-Pacific region to the enhanced sustainable and holistic waste management scheme.

The design and delivery of the waste management capacity building courses will be done through a consortium of knowledge partners. The partners are;
1.    Asian Institute of Technology, Thailand
2.    Kyoto University, Japan
3.    Tongji University, China
4.    The Energy & Resource Institute (TERI) University, India
5.    University of New South Wales, Australia
6.    Griffith University, Australia.

UNEP-IETC and Regional Resource Centre for Asia and the Pacific (RRC.AP) at AIT will be the Secretariat for coordination amongst 6 universities.  UNEP-IETC will be the overall guiding body for the project. The project will follow the UNEP policy and mandates.
